Recent emails might not appear in search results in the Microsoft Outlook desktop app KB5008212

After installing the November 22, 2021 or later updates, recent emails might not appear in search results in the Microsoft Outlook desktop app. This issue is related to emails that have been stored locally in a PST or OST files. It might affect POP and IMAP accounts, as well as accounts hosted on Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft 365. If the default search in the Microsoft Outlook app is set to server search, the issue will only affect the advanced search.

This Bug is related to December 14, 2021—KB5008212 (OS Builds 19041.1415, 19042.1415, 19043.1415, and 19044.1415)

TEMPORARY WORKAROUND

To disable Windows Desktop Search Service for Outlook do the following:

  1. In Windows, right-click Start, and then select Run. In the Open: box type regedit, and then click OK. This will open the registry editor.
  2. Find this subkey in the registry and then click it:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows
  3. Click Edit > New > Key and name the new key Windows Search.
  4. Select the new Windows Search key.
  5. Click Edit > New > DWORD Value.
  6. Type PreventIndexingOutlook for the name of the DWORD, and then press Enter.
  7. Right-click PreventIndexingOutlook, and then click Modify.
  8. In the Value data box, type 1 to enable the registry entry, and then click OK.
  9. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart Outlook.

Note: To disable the PreventIndexingOutlook setting, type 0 (zero), and then click OK.
