LiFi – IEEE 802.11bb Standard

IEEE has endorsed the 802.11bb standard, also recognized as LiFi. The IEEE 802.11bb standard defines the physical layer specifications and system architectures for wireless communication using light waves.

Instead of using wireless network signals, Li-Fi uses invisible (unnoticeable to the human eye) infrared light to deliver light-based wireless optical connectivity at speeds up to 100 times faster than Wi-Fi.

The Light Communications 802.11bb Task Group was formed in 2018 chaired by pureLiFi and supported by Fraunhofer HHI

Data transfer is achieved by turning the LEDs (Light-Emitting Diode) on and off many times a second and by altering the length of those flickers, as well as the other properties of light. the technology requires almost direct line-of-sight to work and can be affected by environmental lighting conditions. In other words, it’s not as flexible and reliable as traditional Wi-Fi.
